This piece began as an exercise to render the surface of an eggshell in half-light. The nuance of the lit area shifting softly into shadow on such a simple form is deceptively difficult to capture.

The egg crate was a quick grab to balance the picture. Then I saw its squat haunches and wide mouth curving downward with discontent. The egg looked threatened, stopped in its tracks—the escapee caught in the spotlight.
